Water & Sanitation - Major Intervention (Past 5 Years)
(Wash in Schools) – CLPOA implemented WinS project with the technical support from Unicef and financial support from Bengal Peerless Housing Development Company Limited with the objective to provide gender specific basic sanitation facilities to prevent water borne diseases and school drop-out & handwashing station and to institutionalize the maintenance management system for newly constructed facilities alongwith capacity building of children, teachers and mothers on improved hygiene practice in 15 schools of Kolkata. This project covered 11590 students of 15 upper primary, secondary and high secondary schools in Kolkata Municipal Corporation area.
NIRMAL ABHIYAN – CLPOA implemented water-sanitation and hygiene promotion programme in 29 Government Aided Schools of Kolkata and Kamarhati in North 24 Parganas under ‘Nirmal Abhiyan’ Project from 2013 to 2022 in partnership with CESC Limited. Development of water and sanitation infrastructure along with conduction of hygiene promotion activities and trainings to ensure behavior change and monitoring of operation & maintenance systems with the involvement of stakeholders were the key features of the project. The initiative directly benefitted 3521 students and 216 teachers. In addition, family members of the students and community members indirectly benefitted from the activities.Sarva Shiksha Mission-Kolkata and Kamarhati Municipality gave active support in all stages of implementation of the project.
NIRMAL PARIVESH – Nirmal Parivesh was a unique and sustainable community sanitation project in Titagarh. CLPOA implemented this project (2020-2022) in partnership with CESC Limited and successfully brought a positive and radical change in the water, sanitation and hygiene scenario within six (6) municipal wards under Titagarh Municipality. The hardware (Construction of Community Sanitary Blocks) and software activities (Operation & Maintenance of Toilet Blocks) were undertaken with the objective of accessibility to safe and hygienic water and sanitation facilities for the entire community of the project area. The most important activity was to construct Community Sanitary Blocks equipped with separate toilet enclosures for male and female, toilets for senior community members as well as for people with special needs, child friendly toilets, change rooms to facilitate menstrual hygiene management,separate bathing enclosures for male & female, hand washing stations,availability of running water, well-illuminated and well-ventilated enclosures.For proper operation & maintenance of toilet blocks, WATSAN Committees (Water and Sanitation) were formed with members from communities and were responsible to maintain the blocks with the fund collected through user charges. Disseminated hygiene education through mass awareness meetings, held community level demonstrations on hand washing, personal health & hygiene, conducted group discussion on menstrual hygiene and adolescent health issues and developed IEC materials were the key activities of the project. Approx.25000 people benefited directly or indirectly of 6 Wards of Titagarh Municipality.
INFRUSTUCTURE DEVELOPMENT –The envisaged outcome of School Sanitation & Infrastructure Development programme conducted by CLPOA is to ensure that investment in improved WASH conditions creates immediate, tangible benefits inside the school environment. The partnership with ONGC provided support for school sanitation & infrastructure development in 4 schools of Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas and 6 schools of North 24 Parganas.
